Hashtags for Online Sellers: What Works on Each Platform (2026)

Most "best hashtags for selling" lists assume every platform runs on hashtags. Many of the places sellers actually make sales do not. Etsy has its own listing tags, Amazon reads a hidden keyword field, TikTok Shop ranks products by their titles, and Facebook Marketplace has no hashtags at all.

This guide covers where hashtags genuinely help a seller, where something else does the job, and how to turn one product into the right format for each platform. We checked the platform rules below against the platforms' help centers and seller guides in October 2026.

Want tags for a product right now? Describe it in our Product Hashtag Generator and get a set sized to each platform's limit. Or read on for the full platform-by-platform breakdown.

Hashtags, Listing Tags and Keywords: Three Different Jobs

Sellers often use "tags" to mean three different things. Getting them straight saves a lot of wasted effort.

  • Hashtags (#SoyCandle) are public labels on social posts. They help Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, X and Threads understand what a post is about and show it to people searching or browsing that topic.
  • Listing tags (soy candle) are private search terms you type into a marketplace or store form, such as Etsy's 13 tags or Shopify product tags. Buyers do not see them. Search systems use them to match a listing to a query.
  • Keywords (pumpkin spice soy candle, 8 oz) are the plain words in your titles, descriptions and bullet points. On every marketplace, they matter more than anything else you add.

The thinking is the same for all three: name the product the way a buyer would type it. Only the format changes.

Platform by Platform

Instagram

Instagram limits posts and Reels to 5 hashtags, announced in December 2025. That makes choice more important than volume. Use the five most specific tags you can: the product category, the type, the key feature, the occasion, and either a location or one shopping tag.

Instagram search also reads your caption, so write the product name and a key detail in plain words, not only in tags. If your account is approved for Instagram Shopping, product tags link a post straight to the item. They are separate from hashtags and do not replace them.

TikTok Videos and TikTok Shop

TikTok has two separate searches to think about.

Your videos use hashtags in the caption, and 3 to 5 focused tags is the common norm. Name the product in the caption text, out loud and in on-screen text too, so viewers know exactly what they are looking at. Shopping tags like #TikTokShopFinds or #TikTokMadeMeBuyIt only make sense when the product is actually for sale on TikTok Shop. For category-by-category tag ideas, see our TikTok Shop hashtags guide.

Your TikTok Shop listing is ranked in the Shop tab by its product title, not by hashtags. TikTok's own seller guide says a title should be 40 to 150 characters and follow this order:

[Brand] + [Product] + [Scope of use] + [Product type] + [Main features]

The same guide says to avoid discount wording, stock information, subjective praise such as "bestseller", repeated words, and lists of every variant you carry.

Facebook: Posts and Reels vs Marketplace

On a Facebook Page, hashtags are clickable but play a small role. One to three specific tags is plenty. The photo, the price and a clear first line of the caption do far more.

Facebook Marketplace has no hashtag feature. Buyers search and browse categories, so put everything a buyer might type into the title and description: product name, brand if you sell it, model, size, condition and pickup area. Pick the most accurate category, because shoppers filter by it.

X and Threads

X's own Help Center recommends no more than 2 hashtags per post. One product tag plus one topical or seasonal tag is a good pattern. Threads takes one topic tag per post, so pick the single best description of the product category.

Pinterest

Pinterest stopped treating hashtags as a search feature around 2020, and today's Pinterest search runs on the keywords in your Pin title, description and board name. Write those the way a shopper searches, for example "pumpkin spice soy candle for fall home decor", and add Pinterest's tagged topics in the Pin editor. Our guide to Pinterest tags vs hashtags covers the details.

Etsy

Etsy uses its own listing tags, and they follow strict rules. According to Etsy's Help Center:

  • Up to 13 tags per listing
  • Each tag up to 20 characters
  • Letters, numbers and spaces only; an apostrophe or hyphen is allowed inside a word, but a tag cannot start with one
  • No # sign

Use all 13 slots, and make them short multi-word phrases a buyer would type ("hand poured candle", "gift for her") rather than single words. Etsy's seller guidance also says categories and attributes act like tags, so fill in every attribute field (color, occasion, material) and spend your 13 tags on phrases that are not already covered there. Repeat your single most important phrase in the listing title, which can be up to 140 characters.

Amazon

Amazon listings do not use hashtags. Amazon search reads your title, bullet points, description and a hidden search terms field. In the US, that field must be under 250 bytes. Amazon says that if it is longer, the whole field is ignored, not just the extra words.

Amazon's rules for search terms:

  • Separate words with spaces; no commas needed
  • Do not repeat words already in your title or bullets
  • Use synonyms, alternate spellings and use cases you could not fit elsewhere
  • Do not include brand names, ASINs, temporary claims such as "on sale" or "new", or subjective words such as "best" or "amazing"

Shopify and Your Own Store

Shopify product tags are not hashtags and buyers never see them. According to Shopify's Help Center, when a customer searches your store for a term that matches a product tag, the tagged products show in the results. You can also use tags to build automated collections and to filter menus. Use them for organizing: "fall collection", "gifts under 30", "soy wax". Then bring the product to new buyers through the social platforms above.

One Product, Every Platform

Here is a single product turned into each platform's format. The product is a hand-poured pumpkin spice soy candle in an 8 oz amber jar, sold online and at a local market.

How to Build Product Hashtags That Sell

Whatever the platform, strong product tags come from the same five questions:

  1. What is it? The category, as buyers say it (#SoyCandle, #RunningShoes, #VitaminCSerum).
  2. What type? The specific version (#PumpkinSpiceCandle, #TrailRunningShoes).
  3. What makes it different? One key feature (#HandPoured, #Waterproof, #FragranceFree).
  4. Who or what is it for? The use case or occasion (#GiftForHer, #HomeGym, #FallDecor).
  5. Where? A city or country tag if you sell or deliver locally.

Add at most one shopping tag, such as #NewArrivals or #TikTokShopFinds, and only when it is true for the product. Tag a brand only if you actually sell that brand. Our Product Hashtag Generator follows this structure, and works in other languages too if your buyers search in more than one.

The 2026 Holiday Calendar for Sellers

The last quarter is peak season. Add seasonal tags a few weeks before each moment, only on products that fit, and remove them once the moment has passed.

Date (2026)MomentExample tags or keywords
Saturday, October 31Halloween#HalloweenDecor, #HalloweenCostume
November 6 to 10 (main day Sunday, November 8)Diwali#DiwaliGifts, #DiwaliDecor
Wednesday, November 11Singles' Day (11.11)#SinglesDay, #1111Sale
Thursday, November 26US Thanksgiving#ThanksgivingDecor, #HostessGift
Friday, November 27Black Friday#BlackFriday
Saturday, November 28Small Business Saturday#SmallBusinessSaturday, #ShopSmall
Monday, November 30Cyber Monday#CyberMonday
Friday, December 25Christmas#ChristmasGifts, #StockingStuffers

Thanksgiving falls late this year, which leaves fewer shopping days between Black Friday and Christmas than in many years. Plan holiday posts and listings early rather than waiting for the last week of November. For broader seasonal tags, see our fall hashtags guide.

On Etsy and Amazon, seasonal words belong in your tags and search terms rather than in hashtags. Swap them in for the season and out afterwards, the same way.

Common Mistakes

Putting hashtags where they do nothing. A # in an Etsy tag, an Amazon search term or a Marketplace title wastes space. Write the phrase without it.

Using generic tags alone. #Sale, #ShopNow and #BuyNow say nothing about the product. Lead with what the item is.

Borrowing brands you do not sell. Tagging a famous brand to catch its searches misleads buyers, breaks Amazon's search terms rules, and can get a post reported.

Overfilling Amazon search terms. Going over the byte limit does not just cut off the end. Amazon ignores the entire field.

Leaving seasonal tags up. A Halloween tag in December makes a listing look abandoned. Set a reminder to remove seasonal tags after each event.

Using shopping tags that are not true. #TikTokShopFinds on a product that is not on TikTok Shop, or #AmazonFinds on one that is not on Amazon, sends buyers looking for something they cannot buy.

Tag Your Next Product in Seconds

One product needs a different format on every platform, but the thinking is always the same: name it the way a buyer searches, then fit it to each platform's rules.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do hashtags help sell products online?

On social platforms, yes, in a supporting role: they tell Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, X and Threads what the product is. On Etsy, Amazon and Facebook Marketplace, search reads titles, descriptions, tags and attributes instead, so hashtags do little there.

How many hashtags should I use on a product post?

Up to 5 on Instagram, 3 to 5 on TikTok, 1 to 3 on Facebook, no more than 2 on X, and one topic tag on Threads.

Are Etsy tags the same as hashtags?

No. Etsy tags are listing keywords: up to 13 per listing, each up to 20 characters, using letters, numbers and spaces, with no # sign.

Does Amazon use hashtags?

Not in listings. Amazon search reads your title, bullets, description and a hidden search terms field, which must be under 250 bytes in the US or Amazon ignores it.

Do hashtags work on Facebook Marketplace?

Not really. Put the product name, model, size, condition and pickup area in the listing title and description, and choose the right category.

What should a TikTok Shop product title include?

TikTok's seller guide recommends 40 to 150 characters: brand, product, scope of use, product type and main features, without discounts, stock information or subjective praise.

When should I add holiday hashtags to product posts?

A few weeks before each moment, and only on products that fit it. Remove them once the moment has passed.

Frequently Asked Questions

On social platforms, yes, in a supporting role. On Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, X and Threads, a few precise hashtags tell the platform what the product is so it can show the post to interested buyers. On marketplaces such as Etsy, Amazon and Facebook Marketplace, hashtags do little or nothing, because those platforms search listing titles, descriptions, tags and attributes instead. The photo or video, a clear caption with the product name, and fast replies do most of the selling.
Instagram allows up to 5 per post or Reel, so use 3 to 5 specific ones. On TikTok, 3 to 5 focused tags next to a clear product demo work well. Facebook posts need only 1 to 3, X's Help Center recommends no more than 2, and Threads takes one topic tag per post.
No. Etsy tags are listing keywords you enter in the Tags field, not hashtags. Etsy allows up to 13 tags per listing, each up to 20 characters, using letters, numbers and spaces (an apostrophe or hyphen is allowed inside a word). Do not add a # sign, and use short multi-word phrases such as 'soy candle' or 'gift for her' instead of single words.
Not in listings. Amazon search reads your title, bullet points, description and the hidden search terms field. In the US that field must be under 250 bytes, and if it is longer Amazon ignores it entirely. Amazon does not allow brand names, ASINs, temporary claims like 'on sale' or subjective words like 'best' in search terms.
Not really. Marketplace has no hashtag feature, so buyers find listings by searching and browsing categories. Put the product name, model, size, condition and pickup area in the title and description in plain words, and save hashtags for your Facebook Page posts and Reels.
TikTok's seller guide recommends 40 to 150 characters in the order brand, product, scope of use, product type, then main features. It says to avoid discount wording, stock information, subjective praise such as 'bestseller', repeated words and long lists of variants like every color you stock.
A few weeks before each moment, and only on products that fit it. In 2026 that means Halloween tags through October (Halloween is Saturday, October 31), Black Friday and Small Business Saturday tags in November (November 27 and 28), and gift tags through December. Remove them once the moment has passed.
