What "Hashtag Research" Actually Means
Before picking a tool, be clear about which question you are trying to answer. Hashtag research tools do one or more of four jobs:
- Discovery: what tags exist around my topic?
- Popularity: how many people use or search for this tag?
- Trend timing: is this tag rising, peaking, or fading?
- Tracking: how is my own campaign hashtag performing?
Free tools cover the first three well. Tracking is where paid tools earn their price.
The Free Tools
1. TikTok Creative Center
TikTok's Creative Center is the best free hashtag research tool on any platform, and many creators still do not know it exists. It was built for advertisers, but TikTok's help center describes it as a free, public resource, and you do not need to log in to use it.
In the Trends section you can search hashtags or filter by industry, region, and time frame. Clicking "See Analytics" on a hashtag shows its trendline, related videos, audience insights, regional popularity, and related hashtags.
- Cost: Free
- Best for: Finding TikTok hashtags that are rising in your region and industry
- Watch out for: The old Creative Center address now redirects into TikTok's advertiser creative suite on ads.tiktok.com, so older bookmarks and guides may look out of date
Once you have candidates, our TikTok Hashtag Generator can round out the set.
2. Instagram's Own Search
The Tags tab in Instagram search is still the most direct way to see what is actually posted under a hashtag. Hashtag pages show public posts using the tag, with Top Posts shown above Most Recent for popular tags.
Two changes matter if your research habits are a few years old. Instagram removed the ability to follow hashtags in December 2024. And in December 2025 Instagram announced a limit of 5 hashtags per post and Reel, which makes choosing the right five far more important than finding thirty.
- Cost: Free
- Best for: Checking that a tag's recent posts actually match your content before you use it
- Watch out for: A tag full of unrelated or spammy posts is a sign to skip it. Our guide to banned Instagram hashtags covers the warning signs
3. YouTube Autocomplete and the Studio Trends Tab
YouTube's search predictions reflect what people are searching for, including trending searches. Type the start of your topic into YouTube search and note the completions. They are real search phrases, which makes them good title keywords and tags.
Inside YouTube Studio, the Trends tab in Analytics shows the top searches from your own audience over the last 28 days, and includes content gaps for Shorts. It shows interest levels rather than raw search volumes. YouTube is phasing out the older Inspiration tab from August 2026, so guides that send you there are out of date.
- Cost: Free
- Best for: Finding the phrases your existing audience actually searches
- Watch out for: YouTube ignores all hashtags on a video that has more than 60. See our YouTube tag limit guide for the full rules
4. X Explore and the Trending Tab
On X, trends are topics or hashtags that X's algorithm judges to be among the most popular at that moment. X says post count is only one of the factors. Trends on your For You view are tailored to your location and who you follow, while the Trending tab is based on location, which you can change to research another market.
- Cost: Free
- Best for: Joining a live conversation while it is still rising
- Watch out for: Trends move in hours. Read the recent posts under a trend before you jump in, so you do not attach your brand to something you do not understand
Our weekly trending hashtags list for X is a good starting point if you do not want to check daily.
5. Google Trends
Google Trends shows relative search interest for a term on a 0 to 100 scale, and you can switch the source to YouTube Search. It does not measure hashtag usage on social platforms, but it is the best free tool for timing: seeing when a seasonal topic starts rising, or comparing two phrasings of the same idea.
- Cost: Free
- Best for: Deciding when to post about a seasonal or trending topic
- Watch out for: Low-volume terms show as zero, and search interest is not the same as hashtag use. Confirm the exact tag on the platform before using it
6. RiteTag's Public Pages
RiteTag, part of RiteKit, suggests hashtags based on real-time engagement data from X. Its public "best hashtags for" pages, such as ritetag.com/best-hashtags-for/travel, list related tags with engagement figures and are free to browse.
The full app, with hashtag suggestions for your own text and images, is paid: $49 per year for 1,000 hashtag suggestions a month, with a 7-day trial.
- Cost: Public pages free; app from $49 per year
- Best for: Related-tag ideas for X
- Watch out for: The data comes from X, so it is a weaker guide for Instagram or TikTok
7. best-hashtags.com
This free site offers copy-paste hashtag sets for broad topics. Each tag page shows recent usage figures, a total post count, and related tags.
- Cost: Free
- Best for: A quick broad starting list for common topics
- Watch out for: The site does not explain where its numbers come from, and some tags in its trending list looked dated when we checked. Treat the figures as rough
8. Hashtag Tools AI Hashtag Generator
Our own tool, so weigh this one accordingly. The AI Hashtag Generator takes a description of your post and returns a platform-specific set, sized to each platform's current rules. There are dedicated generators for Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, X, LinkedIn, Facebook, Threads, and Pinterest, plus niche generators for areas like beauty, travel, food, and real estate. We also publish trending hashtag lists for Instagram, Threads, X, and Facebook, researched and updated every week.
- Cost: 5 free generations a day
- Best for: Getting a relevant starting set in seconds, especially across several platforms
- Watch out for: It suggests hashtags; it does not show live post counts. For fast-moving trends, check the tag on the platform before posting
The Paid Tools (With Trials)
If the free tools answer your questions, stop here. The paid tools below make sense when you post on Instagram at volume or need to track a campaign hashtag over time.
Later
Later is a scheduler with hashtag features built in. Hashtag Suggestions, which lets you search for related hashtags, is included on all paid plans and covers Instagram and Facebook. Auto Hashtag Suggestions, which generates tags from your caption, is on the Growth and Scale plans and works for Instagram.
- Free option: 14-day trial, no free plan
- Paid: Starter from $18.75 a month, billed yearly
- Best for: Instagram creators who want research and scheduling in one place
Flick
Flick is an Instagram-focused hashtag tool with hashtag search, saved collections, suggested hashtags, detailed hashtag metrics, and performance tracking for your posts.
- Free option: 7-day trial on all plans, no free plan
- Paid: Solo from £11 a month, billed yearly
- Best for: Instagram accounts where hashtags are a core part of the strategy
Display Purposes
Display Purposes is a paid Instagram tool offering hashtag search, tracking, and a banned-hashtag checker.
- Free option: 3-day free trial
- Best for: Checking Instagram hashtags for problems before you use them
Metricool Hashtag Tracker
Metricool is primarily a scheduling and analytics tool with a free plan (one brand, 20 scheduled posts a month, all networks except LinkedIn and X). Its Hashtag Tracker is separate: according to Metricool's help center it is not included in any plan and is sold pay-per-use at 25 euros per day per social network, covering X and Instagram. It tracks up to 25,000 posts on X or 10,000 on Instagram per session, refreshing every 8 hours.
- Free option: Free plan for scheduling and analytics; the Hashtag Tracker is pay-per-use. Code HASHTAGTOOLS30 gives a 30-day free trial of paid plans (affiliate link)
- Paid plans: Starter from 16 euros or $20 a month, billed annually
- Best for: Measuring a branded or event hashtag during a launch or campaign window
Where Buffer Fits
Buffer comes up in almost every hashtag tool list, so to be clear: Buffer does not do hashtag research. Its Hashtag Manager lets you save and reuse groups of hashtags while composing posts, and it is available on the paid Essentials and Team plans.
That still makes it useful as the last step. Research your tags with the free tools above, save your best groups in Buffer, and schedule from there. Buffer's free plan covers 3 channels with 10 scheduled posts per channel at a time. Essentials, which adds the Hashtag Manager, costs $5 per channel per month billed yearly, or $6 monthly, with a 14-day trial. For a full scheduler comparison, see Buffer vs Later vs Metricool.
Tools That Changed or Disappeared
- All-Hashtag: When we checked in September 2026, all-hashtag.com showed a parked placeholder page, and its old generator URL returned a server error.
- Instagram hashtag following: Removed in December 2024. You can still search and use hashtags.
- YouTube's Inspiration tab: Being phased out from August 2026, with YouTube pointing creators to its newer Studio features instead.
If a hashtag guide still recommends any of these, check its date.
A Free 10-Minute Hashtag Research Workflow
You do not need a paid tool to research hashtags properly. This workflow uses only free tools:
- Start with a candidate set. Describe your post in the AI Hashtag Generator and get 10 to 15 candidates.
- Check the platform. Search each candidate on the platform you are posting to. Drop any tag whose recent posts do not match your content.
- Check the trend (TikTok and X). Look up your strongest candidates in TikTok Creative Center or X Explore. Prefer tags that are rising over ones that have peaked.
- Check timing (seasonal content). Compare the topic in Google Trends to see whether interest is building or fading.
- Mix sizes. Keep one or two broad tags, and make the rest specific to your niche. Specific tags face less competition.
- Respect the count. Instagram now caps posts at 5 hashtags, X's own guidance is no more than 2, and 3 to 5 is the common norm on TikTok and YouTube. See how many hashtags to use per platform.
- Save the winners. Keep the sets that work in a note or a scheduler's hashtag manager, and review them monthly.
Post: Beginner sourdough tutorial (Instagram Reel)
Candidates: #Sourdough #SourdoughBread #BreadBaking #HomeBaking
#SourdoughForBeginners #BakingTutorial #Bread #Foodie
After check: #SourdoughForBeginners #SourdoughBread #BreadBaking
#HomeBaking #Sourdough
Dropped: #Bread and #Foodie (too broad, unrelated recent posts)
#BakingTutorial (few recent posts)
Common Mistakes
Paying before you know your question. If you need discovery or trend timing, the free platform tools are as good as anything paid. Pay only for tracking or deep Instagram data you will actually use.
Treating post counts as the goal. The biggest tags are the most crowded. A tag with fewer posts that matches your content exactly usually serves you better.
Trusting old tool lists. Several popular tools have changed their free options or disappeared since 2024. Check any list's date.
Researching once and never again. Trends move. Review your saved sets every month, and check trending tags every week if you post timely content.
Using a trending tag your post is not about. It is misleading, most platforms treat it as spam, and it attracts viewers who will not engage.
Start Researching Hashtags for Free

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best free hashtag research tool?
It depends on the platform. TikTok Creative Center is the strongest free tool for TikTok. For YouTube, use search autocomplete and the Studio Trends tab. For X, use Explore. For Instagram, use the in-app Tags search. For a quick starting set on any platform, use an AI hashtag generator.
Are there completely free hashtag research tools?
Yes. The platforms' own tools and Google Trends are free, RiteTag's public pages and best-hashtags.com are free to browse, and our AI Hashtag Generator gives 5 free generations a day. Later, Flick, and Display Purposes offer trials, not free plans.
Does Buffer have a hashtag research tool?
No. Buffer's Hashtag Manager saves and reuses hashtag groups on paid plans. It does not suggest new hashtags or show popularity data.
Is Metricool's hashtag tracker free?
No. Metricool's help center says the Hashtag Tracker is pay-per-use at 25 euros per day per social network, covering X and Instagram. It is not part of the free plan.
Can I use Google Trends for hashtag research?
For timing, yes. Google Trends shows relative search interest, including YouTube search, but it does not measure hashtag use on social platforms. Confirm the exact tag on the platform itself.
What happened to All-Hashtag?
When we checked in September 2026, all-hashtag.com showed a parked placeholder page and its generator URL returned an error. The free tools in this guide cover the same ground.
How often should I redo hashtag research?
Review your saved sets monthly, and check trending tags weekly if you post timely content. Trends on X and TikTok can rise and fade within days.
